Central Oregon MORNING Fire Update

Central Oregon – Thunderstorms brought rain, wind and lightning to Central Oregon yesterday, with over 250 strikes in 24 hours.

Firefighters responded to several new starts across Central Oregon yesterday as afternoon thunderstorms moved through the area. With the exception of a human caused fire near the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, all fires were kept under 1 acre.

The Castle Fire is now up to 22 acres and as of 1 p.m. Sunday, August 3, will be managed by the Type II Oregon-California Incident Management Team 2, (Brett Fillis). This is the same team that was in command of the Bridge 99 Complex.  Firefighting efforts have been challenged by difficult terrain and access to the fire area. Hotshot crews have put in containment lines around the top of the fire, but cannot access the base of the fire, which is in steep, rocky terrain.. A Level 3 Evacuation remains in place for Monty Campground on the Sisters Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest, as does a Level 1 Evacuation for the Perry South Campground.

The South Fork Complex grew to 16,581 acres yesterday due to gusty winds and dry fuels.  The fire crossed Murderer’s Creek and is actively burning to the north and northeast. Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 4 (Brian J. Watts) took command of the fire on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. Incident Command Post (ICP) has been set up at Gander Ranch near Dayville, OR. These fires are located approximately 20 miles south of John Day.

Oregon Incident Management Team 3 (Type II - Johnson) is still in command of the Sniption Fire, 15 miles N of Fossil, OR.  The fire is 25,937 and is 90% contained.  Oregon Incident Management Team 3 is coordinating with Gillam County on response to the fire.

The Haystack Complex is 1,740 acres and is 95% contained. Firefighters assigned to this fire have been assisting in initial attack efforts to keep lightning caused fires in the surrounding area small.  For more information on the Haystack Complex call 503-758-8253.

Central Oregon EVENING Fire Update

Central Oregon – Firefighters responded to several new starts across Central Oregon as afternoon thunderstorms moved through the area. The largest fire at press time was a brush fire south west of the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond. Firefighters responded quickly to the brush fire and contained it at 8 acres. Work will continue through the evening on all new starts.

Gusty winds increased fire activity on the South Fork Complex this afternoon, combining the Placedor Gulch Fire with the Murderer’s Creek Fire, which has jumped Murderer’s Creek  and is actively burning on BLM land, east of the South Fork of the John Day River. Firefighting crews and engines are being assisted by airtankers and heavy equipment.

The Castle Fire on the Bridge 99 Complex continued to slowly creep downhill today.  Firefighting efforts have been challenged by difficult terrain and access to the fire area. Hotshot crews have been working to put in containment line and have been aided by aerial resources. A Level 3 Evacuation remains in place for Monty Campground on the Sisters Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest, as does a Level 1 Evacuation for the Perry South Campground.

Oregon Incident Management Team 3 (Type II - Johnson) continued to make good progress on the Sniption Fire, 15 miles N of Fossil, OR.  The fire is on approximately 25,000 acres of private and BLM managed lands and is 60% contained.  Oregon Incident Management Team 3 is coordinating with Gillam County on response to the fire.

The Haystack Complex is 1,740 acres and is 80% contained. The three fires are burning primarily on private land and are located 3 miles NE of Spray (Haystack Fire), 3 miles NE of Dayville (Throop Fire) and 7 miles NE of Monument (Steet Fire).   For more information on the Haystack Complex call 503-758-8253.

FIRE NEWS--Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center
For Immediate Release:  August 2, 2014 11:00 a.m.

Central Oregon MORNING Fire Update

Central Oregon – Initial attack resources continue to be challenged by high temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms which have ignited dozens of new fires in Central Oregon. Two more fires were reported last night, bringing the total to 30 fires reported in the past 24 hours. A Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms bringing abundant lightning continues through 11 p.m. today.

The Castle Fire outside of Sisters has now been absorbed into the Bridge 99 Complex Type III Management team.  The fire slopped over lines created yesterday and due to the steepness of the terrain, there is continued potential for growth as debris from inside the fire area rolls down hill and outside preliminary fire lines. Hotshot crews and engines will be aided by aerial resources battling the 13 acre fire today. A Level 3 Evacuation remains in place for Monty Campground on the Sisters Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest, as does a Level 1 Evacuation for the Perry South Campground.  An area closure is in place for the Bridge 99 Complex fire and a map of this is available on the Deschutes National Forest website under “Deschutes Fire Closures.”

In addition to initial response efforts, Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Incident Management Team 1 (Type 1 - Buckman) continued to work on three fires called the Haystack Complex burning primarily on private lands.  The fires are located 3 miles NE of Spray (Haystack Fire), 3 miles NE of Dayville (Throop Fire) and 7 miles NE of Monument (Steet Fire).   For more information on the Haystack Complex call 503-758-8253.

Oregon Incident Management Team 3 (Type II - Johnson) took over management of the Sniption Fire, 15 miles N of Fossil, OR, today.  The fire is on approximately 25,000 acres of private and BLM managed lands and is 60% contained.  Oregon Incident Management Team 3 is coordinating with Gillam County on response to the fire.

Today Oregon Incident Management Team 4 (Type II-Watts) was ordered to take over management of three fires (Murderer’s Creek, Buck Fork, and Placer Gulch) around the South Fork of the John Day River.  The fires will be put into a complex and be called the South Fork Complex.

FIRE NEWS--Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center
For Immediate Release:  August 1, 2014 10 a.m.

Friday, August 1 morning fire update

PRINEVILLE, Ore.—Central Oregon experienced significant lightning activity last night, which created a number of new starts from the east slopes of the Cascades east to the Dayville area.

By 9 a.m. this morning, the dispatch center had fielded more than 20 reports of potential new fires since 8 p.m. last night. Reports are expected to continue coming in throughout the morning.

A new fire 15 miles south of Dayville and 4 miles east of the South Fork John Day River had grown to 3,000 acres by early morning on BLM-administered lands.

Crews worked through the night to protect three threatened structures in the Murderers Creek area and keep open a road for ranch owners to access their property. Firefighting efforts will continue throughout today.

Other reports include multiple, small starts west and northwest of Sisters, including four strikes immediately surrounding Black Butte. There are two starts reported in the Three Sisters Wilderness, one start immediately west of Elk Lake, two starts just southeast of Wickiup Reservoir, and six small starts south of China Hat.

Other activity includes multiple, small starts across Prineville BLM-administered lands, including several south of Brothers, and isolated starts across the Maury Mountains and Ochoco Mountains.

Oregon Team 3, a Type 2 Incident Management Team, is expected to take command of the Sniption fire near Condon today.

The Sniption fire is a wind-driven grass fire that originated about 7 miles west of Condon on Tuesday on private property. The fire has since spread south and west onto both private and BLM lands, moving into Thirtymile Canyon and Sniption Canyon.

The fire is reported at 25,000 acres and 20 percent containment.

Firefighting efforts have focused on keeping the fire west of Highway 19, which connects Condon to Fossil, and protecting 10 threatened ranches in the area. Crews will continue suppression efforts today using air and ground resources. Currently, 127 firefighters are assigned to the fire.

Future updates on the Sniption fire will be available online at: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4026/

Two fires southwest of Dayville continue to put up smoke but have not grown. One fire is reported at 13 acres and another at 40 acres. Crews have fought the fires with water drops from a helicopter due to the steep, inaccessible terrain.

Three fires east of Dayville are being managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry as the Haystack Complex. Information on those fires can be found online at: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4020/

The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms producing abundant lightning. The warning will be in effect through 11 p.m. Saturday, August 2.

Storms that develop are expected to bring with them at least the potential for some rain, with precipitation ranging from a few hundredths of an inch to around a quarter of an inch.
