 Central Oregon Fire Update

Central Oregon – With the exception of the South Fork Complex, several Central Oregon fires are being downgraded to Type III and Type IV incidents and management of these fires is being transferred back to local units.

The South Fork Complex continues to grow as strong winds swept across the fire area yesterday afternoon and increased fire activity. The complex is made up of the Murderers Creek South fire which grew to 37,292 acres yesterday and the Buck Fork Fire. Firefighters have put in strong containment lines on the west flank of the Murderers Creek fire, keeping it east of the South Fork John Day River. Fire line has been put in around the Buck Fork Fire, which increased to 2,239 acres yesterday, and firefighters on the ground are working closely with aerial resources to identify and attack spot fires that escape containment lines.
These fires are located approximately 20 miles south of John Day. For more information on this complex, call: 866-347-0636.

The Goose Paint fire will likely be turned back to local units tomorrow and will be put into patrol status. The fire was held at 190 acres nine miles north of Mitchell, Oregon and burned a mix of private and BLM-administered lands.

The Castle Fire on the Deschutes National Forest is 85% contained and management of the fire will be transferred back to the local unit. Fire lines held around the 16 acre fire yesterday despite stronger-than-normal winds across the fire area. The area closure associated with this fire and the Bridge 99 Complex remains in place, which includes the Monty Campground.

The National Weather Service in Pendleton is forecasting possible thunderstorms with lightning through this weekend. Due to the potential impact of more lightning in the area, the Central Oregon Fire Management Service (COFMS) will be maintaining staffing levels for crews and resources through the weekend.

Central Oregon MORNING Fire Update

Central Oregon –  Firefighters quickly responded to two new fires on the Crescent Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest yesterday, keeping them under 1 acre. There are over 150 fires across Central Oregon--most less than an acre--that have started since July 28.  All fires that have been contained and mopped up are being monitored and patrolled.

The Goose Paint Fire nine miles north of Mitchell, Oregon did not grow yesterday. Firefighters have put containment line around the fire and will continue improving that line today. The Goose Paint Fire is burning on 190 acres in a mix of private and BLM-administered lands.

The South Fork Complex continues to be managed by Oregon Incident Management Team 4 (Type II-Watts). The fire is now reported at 35,965 acres and is 15% contained. This group of fires is located south of John Day, Oregon and east of the Ochoco National Forest. For specific information about this incident, please call (866) 347-0636.

The Castle Fire burning south of the Metolius River on the Sisters Ranger District, Deschutes National Forest is now 60% contained and remains at 16 acres. An area closure remains in place for the Sisters Ranger District, which includes the Monty Campground.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for northeast Oregon and southeast Washington, which will also be bringing increased winds to Central Oregon this afternoon.

Central Oregon EVENING Fire Update

Central Oregon – Firefighters are currently responding to the Goose Paint fire burning predominantly on private land and some BLM, east of the Sutton Mountain area and 4 miles southeast of Twickenham, Oregon. The fire is currently 120 acres with zero containment. Several engines and single engine air tankers are responding.

Another round of lightning peppered Central Oregon today with over 250 strikes recorded in 24 hours. There have been no other smoke reports at press time.

The Castle Fire has been more accurately mapped at 16 acres and is 30% contained. Firefighters have been able to begin putting in direct fire line on the south side of the fire which has experienced growth due to debris rolling out of the fire area down the steep hill. An area closure remains in place for the Sisters Ranger District, which includes the Monty Campground.  Individuals and groups in the Perry South Campground have been cautioned that there is a fire in the area and have been encouraged to stay informed about fire operations in the area.

The South Fork Complex has increased to 24,085 acres.  Incident Command Post (ICP) has been set up at Gander Ranch near Dayville, OR. These fires are located approximately 20 miles south of John Day. For more information on this fire, call: 866-347-0636.

 Central Oregon Fire Update

Central Oregon – Firefighters have responded to 150 fires in Central Oregon since July 28. The majority of those fires were started by ‘abundant’ lightning that accompanied several days of afternoon thunderstorms.

Lighting fires can take several days to begin putting up smoke so Oregon Department of Forestry, BLM and Forest Service firefighters will remain vigilant in patrolling existing fires and responding to new smoke reports. This week will continue to challenge initial attack efforts as low humidity and high winds are predicted across Central Oregon.

The Castle Fire is still listed at 22 acres and the Oregon-California Incident Management Team 2 has taken command of this incident and individuals with questions can contact 541-549-3219.
An area closure remains in place for the Sisters Ranger District, which includes the Monty and Perry South Campgrounds.

The South Fork Complex has increased to 16,981 acres.  Incident Command Post (ICP) has been set up at Gander Ranch near Dayville, OR. These fires are located approximately 20 miles south of John Day. For more information on this fire, call: 866-347-0636.

Central Oregon EVENING Fire Update

Central Oregon – Cooler temperatures, higher humidity and no recorded lightning strikes aided firefighting efforts across Central Oregon today.  However, due to several consecutive days with abundant lightning, small fires continue to pop up. Eight new smoke reports were filed with Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch today, most of them in the Oregon Badlands Wilderness area.

All of the fires within the Oregon Badlands Wilderness area were approximately .10 of an acre and many were put into monitor status due to the sparseness of the fuels in the area, which made fire spread unlikely. The fire starts that were within 1 mile of private land were actively engaged by firefighters who put containment lines around them, mopped up and will continue to monitor.

The Castle Fire is now up to 22 acres and as of 1 p.m. Sunday, August 3, will be managed by the Type II Oregon-California Incident Management Team 2, (Brett Fillis). This is the same team that was in command of the Bridge 99 Complex.  Firefighting efforts have been challenged by difficult terrain and access to the fire area. Hotshot crews have put in containment lines around the top of the fire, but cannot access the base of the fire, which is in steep, rocky terrain.  A  Level 3 Evacuation remains in place for Monty Campground and a Level 1 Evacuation remains in place for the Perry South Campground—both campgrounds are on the Sisters Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest.

The South Fork Complex remains at 16,581 acres with 0% containment.  Afternoon thunderstorms bringing gusty winds are expected across the fire area this afternoon as the fire continues to burn to the north and northeast. Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 4 (Brian J. Watts) took command of the fire on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. Incident Command Post (ICP) has been set up at Gander Ranch near Dayville, OR. These fires are located approximately 20 miles south of John Day.

Oregon Incident Management Team 3 (Type II - Johnson) is still in command of the Sniption Fire, 15 miles N of Fossil, OR.  The fire is 25,937 and is 90% contained.  Oregon Incident Management Team 3 is coordinating with Gillam County on response to the fire.

The Haystack Complex is 1,740 acres and is 95% contained. Firefighters assigned to this fire have been assisting in initial attack efforts to keep lightning caused fires in the surrounding area small.  For more information on the Haystack Complex call 503-758-8253.

3 smoke reports within the Oregon Badlands Wilderness

3 smoke reports within the Oregon Badlands Wilderness

Three small fires (all are approx. .10 of an acre) have been discovered in the Oregon Badlands Wilderness near Highway 20.
Wilderness fires are put in monitor status unless need to be actively engaged by firefighters. This particular area has a lot of sand around and between ground fuels, which would make the spread of fire unlikely.
